After 8 months of high water, we are fortunate to say there
have been only two boating accidents at Rim Shoals, each with
happy endings. Both involved the
same tree located on the north bank near the sign at the top of
the catch and release. We also know of at least two other boats further
up river that are under water. Thankfully, nobody has been
seriously hurt. But going into the winter season, river traffic is
very light and rescuers are few. Here are some of Gary's safety
tips.
- Stay aware of the river and your position at all times.
It is best to have one person in charge of motoring, while
passengers fish, like a designated driver.
- Most guides drift fishing in high water leave their motor
idling, rather than turning it off.
- Do not get too close to banks.
- Absolutely no drag chains or throwing anchors.
- Loose items, like ropes, should be stowed away.
- Keep a knife secure and close at hand, not in your tackle
box.
- Make sure your boat is properly equipped with safety
equipment and wear your life jacket in heavy water.
